As a therapist rooted in a client-centered approach, I am committed to providing you with empathy, compassion, and a peaceful, supportive environment where you can safely explore your past traumas, and manage stress, anxiety, depression, and more. Together, we will work collaboratively to uncover and address underlying trauma, develop effective coping strategies, and build self-awareness. I have experience working with individuals facing a variety of mental health and substance use disorders. In our sessions, I draw upon evidence-based practices such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing, while also being able to integrate faith into our work if it aligns with your values. Healing and growth are not destinations but ongoing processes of discovery, transformation, and becoming. My role as your therapist is to walk alongside you on this lifelong journey, fostering holistic change and resilience every step of the way.

I believe that one of the most healing aspects of therapy is the relationship between therapist and client which is one intended to be that of a traveling companion rather than an "expert"-"advice receiver" relationship. This is why I tend to pay special attention to the formation of that relationship in order to help others explore what matters to them and engage in those values in the face of mental health barriers. I have been able to work with individuals that find themselves struggling with lasting impacts of trauma, depression, anxiety, interpersonal concerns, and life transitions.

I'm passionate about helping you to both recognize and build inner resilience. My holistic understanding of wellness is rooted in culturally competent and evidence based approaches to psychotherapy. This foundation is informed not only by my clinical training, but also by an eclectic background in academia, psychological research, social justice movements, a variety of spiritual and religious contexts, mentoring teens, and teaching yoga. I hold an MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Christian Theological Seminary and a Clinical Mental Health Counseling license in the state of Indiana. In addition, I hold a BA in both psychology and religious studies from Indiana University, which provides me with a broad understanding of how spirituality, religion, trauma, family systems, and society can affect us both negatively and positively. Learning and growing is a lifelong process that doesn’t end with a degree or certification. I am committed to and energized about my own growth as a clinician and person. This commitment to my own wellness and growth is a cornerstone to my work as a therapist.

Licensed Mental Health Counselor
Indianapolis, IN

My name is Elizabeth Askren, but most people that know me call me Beth. I'm a licensed mental health counselor, and I see clients in a private practice setting. My practice is Core Counseling & Wellness. I am trained and licensed as a mental health counselor, and I feel especially passionate about working with adults who struggle with anxiety, codependency, perfectionism, and those who have been called “overachievers”. I work with people to recover from emotional abuse, trauma, and neglect from both developmental or adult relationships, amd who struggle with self-worth and self-doubt, to those seeking to overcome developmental trauma, and who find themselves struggling with adult insecure attachment and toxic relationship patterns. Clients work with me to explore and heal the issues at the core of these struggles, and learn to regulate and process emotions and tolerate distress that can often make day to day life feel unbearable at times. Developing boundaries and finding validation and security from within are a part of this process. Along the way, I help clients identify and replace behaviors that are no longer serving them and are problematic in their current life. I assist clients in developIng new skills allowing them to shift towards living authentically, finding fulfillment, finding themselves, and ultimately finding joy. I see clients come out the other side with greater self-worth, grounded by confidence in themselves, discovering new opportunities while creating a fulfilling life in which they can thrive. Good therapy starts with genuine compassion and acceptance. These are core values of both my practice & my life. I love being a therapist. Genuinely, I really really love it. The work I do with clients is inspired by the deep work I've done myself. I show up to every session with an understanding of how it can feel to sit in my client's chair. If invited, I'd be honored to discuss working together. Contact me if you would like to setup time for a phone chat to explore this. I primarily work with clients in-person in my Broad Ripple office, but can take advantage of virtual appointments when clinically appropriate and necessary. Payment for services is due at the time of service. I am not “in-network” with any insurance plans, and am considered an “out-of-network” provider (or self-pay). While I am happy to offer some information and guidance to clients who have insurance plans that include out-of-network benefits, I do not bill insurance or submit claims, and can not guarantee reimbursement or coverage for services. Please contact your plan to identify if your plan includes out-of-network coverage, and if so what the reimbursement and limitations to coverage may be. I accept HSA & FSA payments, credit cards, checks, or cash.

Stress, anxiety, and depression can consume us in unimaginable ways. Throw in the complexities of navigating important relationships, and whoa, can life seem overwhelming. As humans, we are all equipped with unique strengths to help us get through the various stressors life presents. My goal in working with you is to ensure a compassionate and non-biased therapeutic setting where you feel safe and comfortable being yourself. Seeking out help is not always an easy thing to do. Im glad you are here. My approach is somewhat eclectic and bioindividual. I typically work with adults and young adults experiencing symptoms of anxiety, ADHD, depression, perfectionism, relationship issues, trauma, and general stress. Here’s a quick bit of information about my education, and areas of focus. I graduated from University of Louisville with Masters in Couple’s and Family Therapy, as well as Social Work. The majority of my training is in family systems therapy. In short, that means I believe all things function as a system and are interconnected. My approach to therapy is person centered, informal, and conversational. I believe it’s important to look at the whole picture, instead of solely placing the weight of the problem on one person. I also enjoy looking at Mind- Body- Spirit connection, which in my opinion tends to promote overall well-being. My focuses areas are: daily stressors, Depression, Anxiety, Life Adjustments, Relational concerns, etc. Some of the techniques I pull from frequently are: CBT,DBT, Distress Dis-tolerance( Mindfulness), IFS, Narrative Therapy, Solution-Focused, and motivational interviewing. Therapy is not a one size fit all. It’s important that the time you spend in session is designed for you. My work with you is tailored to you. My goal in session is to collaborate with you on your desired plan. I see myself as an assistant/ collaborator to helping you turn over the pieces in your life that need your attention. Therapy is the space and time where you are given the opportunity to be who you are. It is the space for you to be accepted and validate in a safe environment.

Presence and accompaniment matter. Relationships transform. We can more easily connect to our true self and touch emotional distress in the presence of another's settled nervous system. Neurobiology and mindfulness science has proven that the human brain can be distraught while simultaneously observing the self with compassion. The ability to be both experiencing and holding the experience is the key to maintaining calm when facing challenges. Whether you feel overwhelmed, stuck, anxiety, anger, depression, or find yourself reacting in ways that leave you feeling alone and hurt, we can come to be with all of it with gentle awareness and respect. Utilizing attuned presence and offering stabilizing mind-body approaches, I support clients in restoring and strengthening connection with themselves and the world around them. It is in the warmth of healthy relationship that we offer our brains the ability to rewire. Our journey will allow space for joy, for pain, for greater self awareness and compassion. Restoring balance, re-engaging with connection, and igniting wisdom through awareness is possible. Please visit my website to schedule your free, 15 minute initial consultation. I look forward to meeting and walking alongside you.

The therapists at IPCI have a passion for working with clients to help them both cope better in the present as well as to explore, and work through, the underlying factors that fuel and perpetuate recurring problems like anxiety, depression, and relationship troubles. Many of our therapists have additional training in trauma work, including EMDR. Dr. Hanzlik is one of the few AASECT-Certified Sex Therapists in Indiana, and has trained other IPCI therapists to provide effective treatment and a specialization in helping patients work through sexual concerns. We also provide psychological evaluation to clarify diagnoses and provide recommendations for accommodations in academic settings.
