I am a licensed therapist with a twenty-four year experience working with adult individuals with a vast of life challenges to assist them in developing adaptive coping mechanisms and strategies to deal with their individual challenges. I am compassionate and truly enjoy what I do. My style or approach to therapy is what I call a “pot” as I borrow from various evidenced-based models, theories and interventions to create a unique working plan for everyone I work with. I do, however, draw heavily from the Strength Perspective, Client Center, Motivational Interviewing, Psycho- dynamic, Solution Focused and Cognitive Behavior Therapy to name a few. We will work together always respecting their autonomy and uniqueness as a person. In addition, I expect my clients to highlight their sense of self-worth, self-value, self-respect as a pathway to improve better outcomes from therapy.

I am a Licensed Clinical Psychologist with expertise in treating trauma, anxiety, substance use problems, and insomnia. I also work with people experiencing life transitions, academic stress, grief, relationship difficulties, and health-related stress. I love working with students and young adults. I have extensive experience working with individuals of diverse cultural, racial, gender, and sexual identities, and I am committed to providing affirming, anti-oppressive care for all clients. No two individuals are the same, so I work with each client to understand their goals and needs for treatment. I provide cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) with integration of other evidence-based methods, such as mindfulness, values, and emotion-focused work. I received my Master’s degree and licensure in Social Work (LMSW) from New York University with a concentration in Complex Trauma and a specialization in co-occurring Substance Use Disorders and Severe Mental Illness. My approach combines person-centered, empathic frameworks, attachment therapies, and expansive trauma-informed CBT and DBT. My ethos is centered in a holistic, harm reduction lens using abolitionist and anti-oppressive practices with a deep commitment to divesting from disease and medical models of healing and recovery. How do we begin to heal the wounds of trauma and reconnect with our bodies safely and healthily? I am trained in Comprehensive DBT, trauma-focused CBT, Somatic Experiencing therapy, Narrative therapy, and Complex Trauma Systems therapy. From a young age and my own traumatic experiences I had an awareness that I wanted to be involved in the healing and recovery space. I saw first hand in my own home and community how important accessible, quality care is to sustainable wellness and long term recovery. After healing through some of my own core trauma wounds, I saw up close the dearth of holistic person centered and person empowered treatment options for so many of the communities that mean so much to me. I began my work in the criminal justice space and that propelled me and fueled me to pursue my MSW to continue my work with justice involved folks who carry stigmatic diagnosis and complex trauma which has deepened my commitment to harvest healing when and where I can. My place in this work is at the intersection of trauma and resilience. Dr. Marguerat Degaard is a New York State Licensed Clinical Psychologist. Her academic journey started in Switzerland with a Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology from the University of Geneva. Wanting to combine her passion for dance and the art of therapy, she came to the US and obtained a Master’s degree in Dance/Movement Therapy in 1986 from Hunter College, NYC. She worked as a Dance Therapist for 14 years, developing, implementing and supervising creative art therapies programs. In 2005 Dr. Marguerat Degaard received her PhD from Adelphi University. Since then she worked in hospital settings adding teaching and training to her work as a clinician. Throughout the years, she continued to receive education and training in different areas of interest. She has been in private practice part time and full time since 2015. Her approach is integrative and flexible greatly influenced and informed by her artistic background. Her many years of work in the mental health field has taught her profound humility in the face of the deepest layers of humanity. She views psychotherapy as an in-depth collaborative and creative process which expands and frees self-expressions allowing untold stories to be told, contradictions to be bridged, and emotions to be touched or re-touched towards richer and healthier self-understanding and life experiences.
